Did you know that Coca-Cola and Pepsi have been used by farmers in India as a alternative to pesticides because it’s cheaper than pesticides and gets the job done just as well?
Pepsi and Coca-Cola strongly disagree that their products can be used as pesticides because they say there is nothing in the drinks that can be used as pest control. But, the Farmers in the Durg, Rajnandgaon and Dhamtari districts of Chhattisgarh disagree and have successfully used Pepsi and Coke to protect their rice plantations against pests. And if you remember correctly Rajnandgaon recently grew a world record in rice production without the use of GMOs. We know using cola as pesticide isn’t exactly 100% natural or organic but surely it must be safer than traditional poisons.
According to CSE (Center for Science and Environment), which is one of the leading voluntary agencies in India, the drinks like Coca-Cola and Pepsi are rich in high levels of pesticide residues. Therefore, farmers use them to eliminate pests and because they are quite cheap compared to conventional pesticides.
In 2003, the CSE carried out a study in which 24 samples were analyzed from various producers of Coke and Pepsi, it was discovered that they include residues of 4 toxic pesticides and insecticides: malathion, chlorpyrifos, lindane, and DDT. Namely, the malathion levels were 87 times more than the norms of EEC. The chlorpyrifos levels were 42 times more and the lindane which is forbidden in the U.S. was 21 times higher. Every sample was toxic that can cause cancer, abnormality, great disruption of the immune system, and negatively impact the reproductive and nerve systems. Pepsi and Coca-Cola had almost the same pesticide concentration, for instance, toxic substances in Pepsi samples were 37 times higher than the norms of EEC while the Coca-Cola ones were 45 times higher. Many tests have also proven that Coke is very efficient for cleaning oil stains, tile grout, and strip paint.
On one hand, the manufacturers of Coca-Cola and Pepsi strongly disagree that their products can be used as pesticides. On the other hand, the farmers in India already use the drinks to protect their rice plantations against pests. Agricultural specialists claim that Coca-Cola and Pepsi will only attract red ants that feed on the larva of insects.
Furthermore, approximately 95% of the US soft drinks contain the same toxins and pharmaceuticals like trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole, gemfibrozil, estrone, carbamazepine, atrazine, atenolol, chlorine, arsenic, and fluoride. Even if you knew that Coca Cola and Pepsi aren’t 100% organic and natural, you are probably left speechless by the fact that they are used instead of pesticides. Hence, instead of drinking it, you can use these drinks for a wide range of other things.
